It is the firing week in the NFL, as far as coaches are concerned, and the latest casualty was a shocker. Mike Shanahan has been relieved of his coaching duties in Denver. Shanahan had been with the Denver Broncos since 1995, only second to the Titans Jeff Fisher for tenure with one team. The Broncos went 8-8 this season, losing their last three games, which ultimately sealed their fate and sent them packing without a playoff berth.

Pat Bowlen, the Denver Brocos owner, issued a statement in which he said that “After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.”

It is likely, however, that Shanahan will not be out of a job for long, as several teams inckuding the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns are looking for new head coaches.
