Bowl Games A Plenty

Of course, we will be celebrating the new year tomorrow; but, New Year’s Day also marks the beginning of the BCS Bowl Games. So, since I’m still in the holiday spirit as I wait for the clock to strike 12, here are my predictions for tomorrow’s games.

Outback Bowl-Iowa vs. South Carolina: If it were the beginning of the season, I probably would have picked the Gamecocks; but, South Carolina was extremely disappointing in their final game of the season against Clemson. Iowa, on the other hand, is hot and their final game against Minnesota that resulted in a blowout 55-0 win wonly helps to fuel their momentum. I expect Iowa to get the easy win.

Capital One Bowl-Georgia vs. Michigan St.: I expect this game to be a close one. As a team, Georgia has been impressive; but, suprisingly, it has been their offense that has been the key to their success. Their defense has allowed far too many points this season; in fact, they allowed 42 points in two of their last three games, both of which were against decent, but not amazing, teams (Kentucky and Georgia Tech). Michigan St. has also been impressive this season; but, their lackluster effort against Penn St. doesn’t bode well for them and they will have to play much better than that if they hope to beat the Dawgs. This may be a nailbiter; but, I see Georgia’s offense being too much for the Spartans to handle.

Gator Bowl-Nebraska vs. Clemson: Both of these teams will are riding a wave of momentum into this game, as they have both won three straight. I have seen several of Clemson’s games this season and they have been far to inconsistent for my liking and when you take a look at the last three games that both teams played, Clemson’s three game winning streak doesn’t seem as impressive. They beat the a lowly Duke team, as well as, two slumping teams, South Carolina and Virginia. So, I’m taking the Nebraska in this one.

The Rose Bowl Game Presented by CITI-Penn St. vs. USC: This is definitely the most anticipated game of the day; but, it may also be the most lopsided one. Penn St. is a bit overrated, in my opinion, but they are definitely more battle-tested than a USC that has coasted this season, as they predominantly played mediocre teams. But, even though they have had a tougher schedule, the Nittany Lions have yet to have seen a team that is anywhere near the calibar of USC. I have seen several of USC’s games this season, and though they are not the same team that they were a few years ago, they still have plenty of talent. I think that they will cruise against the Nittany Lions and take the easy win.

Fed Ex Orange Bowl-Cincinnati vs. Virginia Tech: Neither of these teams has been amazing; but, similarly to their fellow ACC team Clemson, Virginia Tech is just far too inconsistent for my taste and their loss to a barely over .500 Miami team is still prevelant in my mind. Cincinnatti, on the other hand, has won six games in a row, including wins over three ranked teams (South Florida, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh). I think Bearcats will ride that wave of momentum right to a Orange Bowl victory.
