One year ago, Maria Sharapova was prepping to play in the first major of the season, the Australian Open, a tournament which she would go on to easily win. Since then, however, Sharapova has battled with a shoulder injury, an injury that forced her to withdraw from the Beijing Olympics and the US Open last season. The shoulder injury has apparently been slow to recover and will, consequently, keep her from defending her title in Melbourne.

In a statement, Sharapova said “I am very sorry to announce that I am not going to be able to defend my title at this year’s Australian Open. My shoulder is doing great, but I just started training a few weeks ago and I am just not near the level I need to be to compete at the highest levels.”
