Australian Open Roundup: Day 2

World number 1 Rafael Nadal doesn’t set foot on the court for about another 2 hours, but most of the matches for the day are already finished. On the men’s side, 13th seeded Fernando Gonzales defeated Lleyton Hewitt in a tough 5 set match 5-7,6-2,6-2,3-6,6-3, all but ending the home country’s chances of winning the tournament. 4th seeded Andy Murray defeated Romanian Andrei Pavel 6-2,3-1 when Pavel, who was attempting to make a comeback after recovering from an injury, retired in the second set. The French trio of 6th seeded Gilles Simon, 12th seeded Gael Monfils, 24th seeded Richard Gasquet was victorious in their first round matches, as well. Other notable players that won their matches are Fernando Verdasco, Jurgen Melzer, Igor Andreev, Nicolas Almagro, Ernests Gulbis, Ivo Karlovic, and Mario Ancic.

On the women’s side, both Williams sisters easily won their opening matches in straight sets. Elena Dementieva, on the other hand, struggled in her opening match, but she was able to narrowly defeat Kristina Barrois of Germany 7-6,2-6,6-1. The women’s side also saw it’s first major casualty, as 9th ranked Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland lost to Kateryna Bondarenko. Some notable women who won their first round matches are Patty Schnyder, Alona Bondarenko, Jie Zheng, Victoria Azarenka, and Dominika Cibulkova.
