The second round of the year’s first major is almost over and nearly all of the top seeds have easily won their first two matches. On the men’s side, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic have all looked good in their first two matches. Nadal has looked particularly sharp, as he has tweaked his serve and flattened out his forehand, which are two changes that have greatly improved his hard court game, thus far. 4th ranked Andy Murray plays his second round match in the night session tonight, though he is certainly favored to make it through this match. In the 3rd round, the Big Three will each have substantiall tougher matches than what they had faced in the first two rounds. Nadal will face Tommy Haas, Federer will face Marat Safin, and Djokovic will face Amer Delic. If Murray wins his match tonight, he will face Jurgen Melzer in the 3rd round.

The top-ranked women have had a much tougher time than the men, as Ana Ivanovic struggled in her first round match and, in the second round, it was Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams who had trouble. All of them, however, were able to pull-out the victories. None of the top women have looked particularly strong as of yet, but I expect that to change in the second week of the tournament. In the 3rd round, Jankovic will face Ai Sugiyama, Ivanovic will face Alisa Kleybanova, Dementieva will face Samantha Stosur, and Serena Williams will face either Shaui Peng or Sesil Karatantcheva.

There are, however, several notable 2nd round matches that will take place later today. For example, Ivan Ljubicic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have just began and, in fact, Ljubicic has broken Tsong and he currently leads the Frenchman 5-3 in the first set. Venus Williams, Andy Murray, James Blake, Ernests Gulbis, and Igor Andreev will all play later today.
