Ana Ivanovic stuggled through her first two matches, but in her third round match, her serve problems and error-filled play finally caught up to her. Her opponent, the 19-year-old Russian Alisa Kleybanova, played very aggressively and, in turn, caused the Serb to make several errors. Kleybanova, who won the match by a score of 7-5,6-7,6-2, will face Jelena Dokic in the 4th round.

In the other marquee matchup of the night, Roger Federer defeated Marat Safin 6-3,6-2,7-6. Federer looked sharp against Safin, as he played often played a brilliant passing shot in the moments that he needed it the most. After the match, Federer reflected on his match with Safin by saying that “It’s special to play Marat, we go way back. I think we like playing each other. It doesn’t matter who wins, it is always a good contest.”

Federer will next face Thomas Berdych, who survived a fourth round match against Stanislas Wawrinka.
