Her father had predicted that she would win it all; instead, Venus Williams will be packing her bags, as she was defeated in her second round match against Carla Suarez Navarro 2-6,6-3,7-5. In the first set, Williams seemed to be destined for a quick victory, but in the second set, everything fell apart. The 20-year-old Suarez Navarro broke Williams twice in the second set and won the last five games of the third set, to win the match.

After the match, Williams said that “she was super-consistent and aggressive and just went for her shots. Probably one of her best matches she’s ever played. I wasn’t in control of the points. I’m definitely used to dictating the points a little bit more. It was kind of a pattern that wasn’t the best for me.”

Serena Williams is the only American woman that remains in the draw. She struggled in her second round match against Gisela Dulko, but was still able to get the victory. She will next face 41st ranked Shuai Peng.
