After his first three matches, Federer looked as if he could win it all. It was in his fourth round match against Thomas Berdych, however, that Federer faced his first true test. Berdych, of the Czech Republic, gave Federer all he could handle, as his overpowering forehands allowed him to control the match in the first two sets. For much of the match, it looked as if Federer was en route to his first exit before the semis of a Grand Slam since his loss to Gustavo Kuerten in the 3rd round of the 2004 French Open. In the end, however, it was Federer’s grit and determination that allowed him to win in five sets 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

After winning the match, Federer was emotional, which is something that he hadn’t displayed earlier in the tournament. It was during this match that Federer showed exactly how much he not only wants to win this tournament, but also how much he wants to regain his position as the number 1 player in the world. When speaking in his post-match press conference he said that “I was feeling fine, you know. I just had a bad start. It was tough for me today, but I found a way and I’m really happy about my performance, in the end…To be able to turn it around and be leading all of a sudden, it’s a great feeling.” He was even complementary towards Berdych, who showed his true potential in today’s match.”I know the danger of playing Thomas…I think today shows why he could be a wonderful player.”

Federer will next face the 8th seed Juan Martin del Potro.
