Roddick Downs Djokovic

The heat claimed another victim in Australia, as Novak Djokovic, who was down two sets to one, retired from his match against Andy Roddick. Djokovic had won the first set against Roddick, but after that set, he looked both mentally and physically weak. As Roddick sprinted to the court after the changeovers, Djokovic hobbled on to the court and by the end of the match, he could hardly even move during the points.

This is Djokovic’s seventh retirement in a major in a major match and he will certainly get some flack for doing so. As Brad Gilbert said, “I can’t imagine Nadal or Federer ever doing this…For the third ranked player and defending champion to do this, it’s shocking.” This latest retirement is certainly more evidence that Djokovic isn’t quite in the same league as Nadal or Federer, just yet.

Roddick’s serve and movement were on point, as he was serving big and at a very high percentage and moving faster than ever. In his post match interview, he looked confident and ready for any challenges that are ahead of him. He will play the winner of the Juan Martin del Potro-Roger Federer match, which will be played later tonight.
