Last week, pictures of Michael Phelps smoking marijuana surfaced on the internet. Phelps publicly apologized for the incident, however, that is not not enough for USA Swimming, as they have suspended Phelps for three months.

USA Swimming released the following statement:

“USA Swimming has reprimanded Michael Phelps under its Code of Conduct by withdrawing financial support and the eligibility to compete for a period of three months effective today, Feb. 5, 2009.

This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.”

He has also lost one of his major sponsors, as Kellogg has decided not to renew his contract when it expires, which will be at the end of the month.

it seems ridiculous that Michael Phelps is getting so much flak from this supposed marijuana scandal… Since when have we taken the reporting of trashy tabloids so seriously?

I agree with you, up to a point. Usually, tabloid stories shouldn’t be taken very seriously, but Phelps admitted the stories are true. Plus, when there are photographs of him actually smoking, it makes him look even worse. If he were any other celebrity, it wouldn’t be a big deal. Phelps, however, is an athlete and in this day and age, athletes taking drugs is always a serious matter.
