World number 1 Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the tournament in Dubai due to a minor knee injury. On his website, he said that “I am very disappointed not to be able to compete in Dubai, but the doctor has advised me to stay home and rest after the pain in my knee in Rotterdam last week. Nothing to be worried about but it needs some rest.”

The injury is tendinitis just below his right knee. Nadal’s withdrawal is another big blow to the tournament in Dubai, as Roger Federer and Fernando Verdasco have also withdrawn due to injuries. Furthermore, the Dubai tournament has been under fire recently because the UAE (United Arab Emirates) refused to allow Shahar Peer, who is from Israel, to play in the tournament. They also initially refused to let doubles player Andy Ram, who is also from Israel, play in the tournament, but they later decided to allow him to play.

Though Nadal will not play in Dubai, he plans to return to play in Spain’s Davis Cup tie against Serbia, where he will likely play against Novak Djokovic.
