Andy Ram on Playing in Dubai

As many of you know by now, Israeli tennis player Andy Ram was initially denied a visa from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to play in Dubai. This decision, however, was overturned and Ram was allowed to play in the tournament. Unfortunately, he and his doubles partner Kevin Ullyett lost in the first round, but a quote he made after the match showed his true character.

“[Sports] is a bridge that connects people, countries, culture, everything, religions, and that’s the beauty of it. That’s why I decided to go into sports and not politics…I decided it was the right decision to play here and I will come and try to do it again.”

It is nice to know that tennis has people like him representing the game. He is truely a classy guy and hopefully he will be successful this season. If only Shahar Peer would have even had the chance to play. I agree with Ram. Sports is supposed to unite people, not drive them further apart.
