Florida St. to Appeal NCAA Penalty

NC State, 20; FSU, 15 by Lance McCord.Florida St. is appealing the NCAA’s decision to strip wins from the Seminoles teams which had athletes on the roster that were involved in a cheating scandal. This penalty would force ten of the school’s teams, including their football team, to vacate any wins that involved athletes who were involved in the scandal. The Seminoles accepted the other aspects of the penalty, which included a loss of scholarships in ten different sports and a four-year probation.

The cheating scandal predominantly occurred through the online testing for a music history course. Some examples of academic dishonesty involving the course included staffers helping students on the tests and there was even a case in which one athlete was asked to take the test for another athlete.

Florida State’s football coach, Bobby Bowden, stated on Thursday that he agreed with the school’s decision. He also went on to say that ”There are different degrees of doing something wrong. You can go five miles over the speed limit. That’s one thing. Or you can go 50 miles over the speed limit, and that’s dangerous. … It just seems like they’re killing a flea with a hammer.”
