Defending Formula One World Champion Hamilton is Prepared to Struggle

Lewis Hamilton by paulwoolrich. In a matter of a few months, Lewis Hamilton has gone from being on top of the world to the bottom. Formula One’s poster boy, who was the Formula One World Champion last season, has admitted that, due to the new regulations have been introduced into the sport, his McLaren team is prepared to struggle for the first few races of the season.

McLaren has performed poorly in winter testing, but it is still somewhat of a shock to hear such comments coming from the team’s golden boy.

Hamilton has said that “despite weeks of winter testing, it’s still difficult to know exactly who has the best package, and finding out over the weekend in Albert Park is always fascinating. Perhaps McLaren Mercedes doesn’t come to Melbourne with the same prospects to challenge at the front that we experienced in both 2007 and 2008, but the whole team will be working tirelessly to help us move back to the front.”

McLaren’s new team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, has also expressed his concerns about the upcoming season. He has said that “we go into the start of the 2009 season fully aware that we do not yet have the technical package that will allow our drivers to fight at the front. In Formula 1, there is nowhere to hide: that’s what makes our sport so demanding and yet so endlessly fascinating. And as a team that goes grand prix racing with the expectation of winning races and challenging for world championships, we therefore go to Melbourne with realistic expectations.”

“Nonetheless, we begin our season with huge determination to re-assert ourselves at the front and we will not rest for a moment until we have done that. Most importantly, we haven’t forgotten how to win.”

I believe that the upcoming season will be a cometitive one, but these comments certainly make me believe that Ferrari has the advantage. McLaren Mercedes could be bluffing, but if they aren’t, then Ferrari has a great chance of winning the title this season. Hamilton has a lot of pressure on him coming into the season, and this may very well be a way for him to take some of the pressure off, with the season-opening Australian GP drawing near. I guess we will find out where everyone truely stands when the race in Melbourne kicks off on March 29.
