Rafael Nadal looked as if he had the match firmly under his control in the third set when he was up a double-break at 3-0. That was when his game fell apart and the 6th seeded Argentine took advantage of Nadal’s poor play, as he went on to win the match 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3).

Though the match was close, it wasn’t always pretty. In fact, there were several times in which both players played poorly. Both Nadal and del Potro struggled towards the end of the third set, as del Potro had several opportunities squandered because of missed forehands and Nadal left many of his forhands short and in the middle of the court.

This win was Juan Martin del Potro’s first win over the number one ranked Spaniard. He will face the winner of the Andy Murray-Fernando Verdasco match in the semifinals.
