Cycling has certaintly cracked down on steroid usage since the days of Lance Armstrong’s dominance, but the increase testing obviously hasn’t stopped some people.

American cyclist Tyler Hamilton tested positive for DHEA, in what was his second doping offense, on Friday. He then announced that he had knowingly injested DHEA and was going to retire from the sport. Had he not retired, he would have faced a suspension ranging between eight years to life. Hamilton said that he took DHEA in order to help with his clinical depression, which he was diagnosed with in 2003. (DHEA is an over-the-counter herbal anti-depressant).

Hamilton told ESPN.com “Right now, I need to deal with my own issues and take care of myself. Did I take it knowing it was on the banned list? Yes. Did I take it because it was performance-enhancing? Absolutely not.”
