It was repeat of last year’s final, as Rafael Nadal faced his countryman David Ferrer on the red clay of Barcelona and, unfortunately for Ferrer, it ended with the same result. Nadal, who won 6-2, 7-5, pulled away from Ferrer in the first set and looked to be on cruise control. Ferrer, however, had other plans in the second set, as he broke Nadal twice. Nadal, however, broke him to get a 6-5 lead and he was able to get the victory on his serve.

“This is much more than a dream for me,” said Nadal. “I never could have imagined I’d be here winning for a fifth time. Congratulations to David. Even though it was not possible for him today he played a great tournament.”

Nadal won his 5th straight Monte Carlo Masters last week and this win marked his 5th straight Barcelona Open title. He will be looking to win his 4th title in Rome next week.

Nadal will be looking for his 5th straight title in the next Grand Slam tournament, the French Open, which takes place in a month.
