Number one ranked Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic in three close sets in the first semifinal match of the Matua Madrilena Madrid Open. Djokovic got an early lead on Nadal when he won the first set 6-3, but Nadal stormed back in the second set and took the set 7-6 (5). Djokovic, however, did not go away in the third set. In fact, he broke Nadal to get a 3-1 lead; however, Nadal broke back in the next game. The rest of the set was extremely close, as both players made unbelievable shots, which led to another tiebreak. In the tiebreak, both players played at a very high level, but it was Nadal that was eventually able to prevail 7-6(9). Nadal dropped to the ground in delight after his victory, as Djokovic looked extremely disappointed after coming so close to victory.

Nadal’s victory in 4 hours and 2 minutes extends his clay court winning streak to 33 matches in a row.

If Djokovic would have won, he would have regained his number three ranking; however, Murray will now retain the ranking for another week.

Nadal will play the winner of the Federer-del Potro match, which will be played later today.
