Rafael Nadal’s 33 match win streak on clay came to and end today when 2nd ranked Roger Federer defeated him 6-4,6-4 to win his first title of the season, in Madrid. Nadal looked sluggish during the match, which allowed Federer to routinely defeat him.

Nadal was coming off of a four hour match yesterday, against Novak Djokovic, and it definitely looked as if it had taken a toll on him.

Federer said that the win over his biggest rival was “very satisfying.” He added that “I thought I took all the right decisions today. In the end it was a perfect game for me. [You] stay positive and I did. I got the win I needed badly.”

This win for Federer makes things interesting with the French Open only two weeks away. Federer is looking to win his first French Open title, which is the only Grand Slam that he hasn’t won. Nadal, however, will be looking to win his fifth consecutive French Open title.
