Wimbledon saw it’s first major casualty today, as the 2004 champion Maria Sharapova lost to Gisela Dulko 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Sharapova, who was playing in her fourth tournament since having shoulder surgery, struggled with both her serve and her forehand, which allowed Dulko to often take control of the rallies.

“I had so many easy balls, and I just made unforced errors from those,” said Sharapova. “When I’ve had those situations before, those balls would be pieces of cake, and today they weren’t.”

The second round exit was a suprise from Sharapova, especially since she had such a good showing at the French Open, which is played on her worst surface. This is definitely a sign that she still had more work to do, particularly with her serve, in order to complete her recovery.

Dulko will play Nadia Petrova in the third round.
