Bruins Win the Winter Classic in Dramatic Fashion

The sellout crowd of 38,112 who packed the 97-year-old Fenway Park were in for a treat as the Boston Bruins (21-12-7) defeated the Philadelphia Flyers (19-18-3) in a dramatic 2-1 overtime win in the Winter Classic. This game had the physicality and grit that the three previous Winter Classics lacked and it even had the first fight outdoors when Philly’s Daniel Carcillo traded blows with Boston’s Shawn Thornton in the first period.

Danny Syvret scored in the 2nd period for the Flyers, while Mark Recchi responded in the 3rd period for the Bruins. It was in overtime, however, that Marco Sturm scored the winning goal for the Bruins.

Overall, everything about this game from the fan experience to the quality of the ice seemed to have improved since past Winter Classics. Of course, the dramatic ending also added to the aura of the game.
