Pitt Panthers Hand Syracuse First Loss

In what is a very competitive Big East conference, anyone can beat anyone at anytime. Cincinnati proved that when they defeated no. 1o UCONN and the Pittsburgh Panthers again showed it when they defeated the previously unbeaten Syracuse Orange 82-72. The no. 5 ranked Orange were only 42.4% from the field, which is far below their season average of 54.7%, and they were only 1 of 13 on 3-pointers. The Panthers, who are the Big East’s number 1 defensive team, were led by Aston Gibbs and Jermaine Dixon who had 24 and 21 points respectively.

Syracuse got into foul trouble early in the 2nd half and as a result Pitt shot 36 free throws, which certainly aided in their victory. This tough loss at home for the Orange drops the number of unbeaten teams to 4 and three of them are scheduled to play later today, as (3) Kentucky hosts Louisville, (2) Texas hosts Texas A&M-CC, and (1) Kansas goes on the road to play (19) Temple.
