After escaping a potential 12-month ban for having traces of cocaine in his system, Frenchman Richard Gasquet was able to continue his comeback quest by defeating Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round of the Brisbane International tournament. Gasquet told reporters “It is just good for me to play with nothing in the head. I tried my best. I could lose, I could win but most important I played relaxed.” Gasquet could potentially face 6th seeded Jurgen Melzer in the second round.

Ana Ivanovic had a tough match against Jelena Dokic, but was able to get the victory 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Aussie Ana had her boyfriend Australian golfer Adam Scott watching her from the stands during what was at times a tense battle. Ivanovic will face Timea Bacsinszky in the second round. The formally top-ranked Serb played sloppy at times, but overall had a positive start to the season.
