Unattended Bag Causes Security Scare in Auckland

The Auckland Tennis Centre, which is currently hosting the WTA ASB Classic was evacuated on Tuesday when an unattended bag was found outside of the venue. The unattended bag combined with protests against Israeli player Shahar Peer that took place lead to an evacuation of the centre. The protests against Peer were reportedly regarding Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Police officers searched the bag and found that it was not a threat. According to Reuters UK, the police also determined that the bad was not linked to the protests.

Peer dealt with similar protests at the tournament last year, but she was able to win 7-5, 6-3 over Polona Hercog despite the conflict.

“As you can see, I’ve come back again. I really like this tournament,” said Peer. “It’s a shame that somebody thinks it’s my fault that there are problems in the world. For me, the most important thing was that even though I was hearing those things, which were not nice, I still won.”
