Tennis Updates

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal cruised through their first round matches in Doha, but there were also upsets that will leave some looking for answers as the Australian Open quickly approaches. But before that, let me tell you that Federer defeated no. 86 Christophe Rochus 6-1, 6-2 in 58 minutes and Nadal won over Simone Bolelli 6-3, 6-3.

“I thought my moving was explosive and nice,” said Federer, which was reported by China View. “I was happy with the way I felt out there. It wasn’t as cold as last year so this was more comfortable to play in and I was overall very happy with the way I played.”

When asked about his match, Nadal said “I am playing well. Today is a good win against Bolelli. He is never an easy player to play against.”

As for the upsets, the biggest of which was American Robby Ginepri’s victory over Robin Soderling, who was the number one seed in Chennai. The American won 6-4, 7-5 in 90 minutes and he made the powerful Swede, who last year had a breakthrough season, look very ordinary. In addition, 38 year old Younes El Aynaoui became the oldest man since 1995 to win an ATP World Tour match. El Aynaoui, who defeated American Ryler DeHeart in Doha, won the Doha title in 2002.
